Real Talk: Tackling hard issues Titus 2:1-14 Addiction

2 But you must say the things that are consistent with sound teaching. 2 Older men are to be level headed, worthy of respect, sensible, and sound in faith, love, and endurance. 3 In the same way, older women are to be reverent in behavior, not slanderers, not addicted to much wine. They are to teach what is good, 4 so they may encourage the young women to love their husbands and to love their children, 5 to be self-controlled, pure, homemakers, kind, and submissive to their husbands, so that God’s message will not be slandered.

6 In the same way, encourage the young men to be self-controlled 7 in everything. Make yourself an example of good works with integrity and dignity in your teaching. 8 Your message is to be sound beyond reproach, so that the opponent will be ashamed, having nothing bad to say about us.

9 Slaves are to be submissive to their masters in everything, and to be well-pleasing, not talking back 10 or stealing, but demonstrating utter faithfulness, so that they may adorn the teaching of God our Savior in everything.

11 For the grace of God has appeared with salvation for all people, 12 instructing us to deny godlessness and worldly lusts and to live in a sensible, righteous, and godly way in the present age, 13 while we wait for the blessed hope and appearing of the glory of our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ. 14 He gave Himself for us to redeem us from all lawlessness and to cleanse for Himself a people for His own possession, eager to do good works.

2 Older men are to be

level headed (nēphalious),

worthy of respect, sensible (sōphronas),

and sound in faith, love, and endurance.

Nephalious:

sober, temperate

abstaining from wine, either entirely or at least from its immoderate use

soprhonas

of a sound mind, sane, in one's senses

curbing one's desires and impulses, self-controlled, temperate

4 so they may encourage the young women to love their husbands and to love their children, 5 to be self-controlled,...

(sōphronas)

Same word used again in vs 6 talking about young men. Sophronas

3 In the same way, older women are to be reverent in behavior, not slanderers, not addicted to much wine.

Addiction is An enslaving, destructive dependency.

Absorbing focus:

Increasing tolerance:

Growing denial:

Damaging consequences:

Painful withdrawal:

28 “Come to Me, all of you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. 29 All of you, take up My yoke and learn from Me, because I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for yourselves. 30 For My yoke is easy and My burden is light.”

Matthew 11

Admit you need help

Pain is not your enemy

  • psalm 73 When I tried to understand all this,

it seemed hopeless

17 until I entered God’s sanctuary.

Then I understood their destiny.

18 Indeed, You put them in

slippery places;

You make them fall into ruin.

Accept responsibility for your choices

  • 2 cor 7:10 For godly grief produces a repentance not to be regretted and leading to salvation, but worldly grief produces death.

See your need for mercy

  • The pleasure of your addiction cannot be compared to mercies of God. He is greater.

Discover gratitude.

  • Romans 11:33 Oh, the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and the knowledge of God! How unsearchable His judgments and untraceable His ways!
  • But thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ! 1 cor 15:57

Surrender is a way of life

Devote yourself to helping others.

3 Praise the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and the God of all comfort. 4 He comforts us in all our affliction, so that we may be able to comfort those who are in any kind of affliction, through the comfort we ourselves receive from God.

Bottom Line: Addiction is an idol. Idols lead to death. Christ leads to life!
